Key takeaways
This article compiles a list of empowering song lyrics, sung by empowering women of this era who all spring to mind when the subject of empowering female musicians arises.
Whether these lyrics touch on feminism, mental health, or strong independent women in general, perhaps they could be the basis for your new mantra.
Lizzo – Soulmate
This certainly wouldn’t be an article about empowering musicians if there wasn’t a bit of Lizzo in here. In much of her music, Lizzo promotes self-acceptance, confidence and the politics of equality in all areas. From her most recent album ‘Cuz I Love You’, Soulmate touches upon not depending on anybody else and loving yourself.
I’m my own soulmate, I know how to love me, I know that I’m always gonna hold me down, yeah, I’m my own soulmate, no, I’m never lonely, I know I’m a queen, but I don’t need no crown.
Kate Nash – All Talk and Rap For Rejection
Kate Nash, most commonly known for her 2007 single Foundations, is an avid feminist and advocate for raising awareness of mental health and the stigma surrounding it. Nash’s 2013 album ‘Girl Talk’ highlights issues surrounding mental health and relationships, as well as the need to stand up for equal rights. All Talk and Rap For Rejection, lyrics from which are listed below, focus specifically on unapologetically continuing to talk about problems until people listen and changes are made.
You have a problem with me ‘cause I’m a girl I’m a feminist And if that offends you, Then fuck you.
We stick together, they tryna keep us quiet, but we wont stop making a fuss, no they can’t shut us up.
Beyoncé – Run the World (Girls)
Beyoncé is a known advocate for social justice, whether that be showing her support for the Black Lives Matter movement, making clear her stance on feminism and female empowerment, or highlighting the wrongdoings of police brutality. Bey’s all-time favourite Run the World (Girls) emphasises the true strength of women in their ability to make a living for themselves and bring human life into the world.
We’re smart enough to make these millions, Strong enough to bear the children, Then get back to business.
Lady Gaga – Born This Way
Feminism is not only about supporting all kinds of women, but also about promoting equality for absolutely everybody. This is something that Lady Gaga touches upon in her iconic Born This Way, which promotes being proud of who you are, with particular reference to those of diverse backgrounds and the LGBTQ+ community.
I’m beautiful in my way, ‘cause God makes no mistakes, I’m on the right track, baby I was born this way, don’t hide yourself in regret, just love yourself and you’re set, I’m on the right track, baby I was born this way.
Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus & Lana Del Rey – Don’t Call me Angel
Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey are all figures to be looked up to. Despite all she has been through and how this has impacted her mental health, Grande in particular remains a great example of a strong female for young girls and women to admire. New hit Don’t call me Angel tackles the belittling of women, highlighting how we are more powerful than pet-names imply and deserve respect.
I make my money and I write the checks, So say my name with a little respect, all my girls successful, and you just our guest.
